The ‘Norokko’ Train on the Senmo and Furano Lines to Cease Operation in Fiscal Year 2025 Due to Aging Carriages and Locomotives
JR Hokkaido has announced that the ‘Norokko’ trains operating on the Senmo Main Line and Furano Line will cease operations in fiscal year 2025 due to the current rolling stock’s aging.
The ‘Kushiro Wetlands Norokko’ on the Senmo Main Line has been in service since 1998, and the ‘Furano-Biei Norokko’ on the Furano Line since 1999, utilizing modified 50-series passenger cars. These sightseeing trains, popular for the natural breeze that comes through their large windows, are now facing retirement after over 40 years in service due to aging and successive discontinuations of parts manufacturing.
Details regarding the operation plan for fiscal year 2025 will be announced in the future. Furthermore, from fiscal year 2026, JR Hokkaido plans to operate new sightseeing trains ‘Red Star’ and ‘Blue Star’ on the Senmo Main Line, Furano Line, and other local lines throughout Hokkaido.
