Number of Foreign Visitors to Japan in 2024 Hits Record High of 36.87 Million
The Immigration Services Agency announced that the number of foreign visitors to Japan in 2024 reached a record high of 36,869,900.
This represents a 47.1% increase compared to the previous year and a 15.6% increase compared to 2019, surpassing the previous record of 31,882,049 set in 2019. Records were broken in 20 out of 23 markets.
According to the Japan Tourism Agency’s inbound tourism consumption trend survey, the total spending by foreign visitors in Japan reached a record high of 8.1395 trillion yen, marking a 53.4% increase from the previous year and a 69.1% increase from 2019. The top countries by expenditure were China, Taiwan, South Korea, the United States, Hong Kong, Australia, Thailand, and Singapore.
By expense type, lodging costs accounted for the most at 33.6%, followed by shopping expenses at 29.5%, and food and drink expenses at 21.5%. The average expenditure per person was 227,000 yen, with Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines being lower in the 100,000 yen range. The United Kingdom had the highest expenditure per person at 383,000 yen. Lodging costs tended to be higher in Western countries and Australia, entertainment service expenses were higher in Australia, and shopping expenses were higher in China.
