London City Airport has submitted an application to the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority for Airbus A320neo operations.
They are also seeking approval for new flight procedures that involve a change in the approach angle. Currently, most operations involve smaller Embraer aircraft, and this change could significantly increase passenger numbers if realized.
In August 2024, the UK government approved a plan to raise the annual passenger cap at City Airport from 6.5 million to 9 million by 2031. This plan does not include an increase in the number of flights or new infrastructure construction, and larger aircraft are anticipated.
City Airport is located in the waterfront area of East London. It is close to the financial district of Canary Wharf and features an operating constraint with a runway only about 1,500 meters long, servicing only major European cities. Due to its compact nature and rail connectivity, it is popular among business travelers.
