Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport to Conduct Runway Renovations from April 14 to August 31

Finavia will conduct renovations on the second runway of Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport from April 14 to August 31.

During this period, the runway will be closed for renovations at the southern end and the taxiways, and the replacement of runway approach equipment. The renovation will include the replacement of approximately 2.4 kilometers of stormwater drainage systems and a total of 30 kilometers of electrical infrastructure. More reliable and energy-efficient lighting systems can be introduced. Finishing works will continue even after the renovation period, affecting runway use during some daytime hours.

During this period, two runways will be available, and there is concern about the impact on operations when strong southeast or northwest winds occur. An increase in aircraft taking off primarily to the south is expected. The second runway, unlike the other two, is designed as a crosswind runway.

The total cost is approximately 30 million euros, with around 18.5 million euros allocated for this year’s works. Renovations on the northern side of the runway were conducted in the summer of 2023.
