Experience the Semi-Private Feel for 1,200 Yen—Is There Already a Battle for the Newly Introduced “P Seats” on the Tokaido Shinkansen?
Tokyo Waterfront Area Rapid Transit (TWR), operator of the Rinkai Line in Tokyo, Japan, will begin revenue service of its new Series 71-000 trains, the first new rolling stock in about 30 years, on October 1.
The first run departs Tokyo Teleport Station at 4:07 p.m. for Shin-Kiba. To mark the start of service, a departure ceremony will be held from around 3:20 p.m. inside the ticket gate concourse and near Car 10 on the platform at Tokyo Teleport Station, featuring a ribbon-cutting and a departure signal by the stationmaster. Members of the general public may observe, although access will be restricted in some areas.
The Series 71-000 will replace the Series 70-000 that has been in service since the Rinkai Line opened in March 1996. A total of eight 10-car sets (80 cars) will be introduced by the first half of fiscal 2027. The trains adopt J-TREC (Japan Transport Engineering Company)’s all-stainless “sustina” rolling stock platform; the front-end design inherits the rounded styling of the Series 70-000. The livery, inspired by a “gentle smile,” incorporates the expansiveness of the sea and waves. Seat width has been increased by 10 millimeters per seat. Dual LCD displays above the doors provide transfer guidance, service status, and station amenity information. For security, all cars are equipped with surveillance cameras, and each car has four voice-enabled emergency intercoms.
