JAL domestic same-day upgrades and standby limited to JAL Mileage Bank members from Dec 18

Japan Airlines (JAL) will, effective for travel on and after December 18, limit eligibility for same-day upgrades and airport standby waitlists on domestic flights within Japan to JAL Mileage Bank members only.

Same-day upgrades and airport standby waitlists can be requested from 3 hours to 20 minutes before departure on the day of travel via the official website or app. If the flight is full, requests will be accepted as a waitlist.

Fares eligible for same-day upgrades are: Flex, Saver, Special Saver, Round-trip Saver, Shareholder Discount, Promotion, JAL Card Discount, Business Flex, Remote Island Discount, Specific Route Remote Island Discount, JAL domestic award tickets, JAL Card navi Discount, Dokokani Mile, and individual inclusive tour fares.

Fees vary by route: upgrading from Economy Class to Class J is 1,100 to 3,300 yen; from Economy Class to First Class is 12,100 to 15,400 yen; and from Class J to First Class is 9,900 or 12,100 yen.

Fares eligible for airport standby waitlists are: Flex, JAL Card Discount, Business Flex, Shareholder Discount, Remote Island Discount, and Specific Route Remote Island Discount.

From travel on December 1, JAL will change the mileage accrual conditions for same-day upgrades, and miles will be accrued based on the fare and booking class of the ticket purchased prior to the upgrade.
