Experience the Semi-Private Feel for 1,200 Yen—Is There Already a Battle for the Newly Introduced “P Seats” on the Tokaido Shinkansen?
Odakyu Electric Railway in Japan has finalized the rolling stock development concept for its new Romancecar, scheduled to begin operation in March 2029.
The development concept is “Sparkle and Run, Romancecar.” Because the Odakyu Group’s service area is blessed with water-related scenery—such as rivers like the Tama River, Lake Ashi, and Sagami Bay—the theme is “water.”
The train will be the 80000 series, formed of seven cars, with a bogie configuration. It will feature observation seats, and the body color will be a pale aqua whose look and feel change depending on the scene. The observation seats and the upper driver’s cab will be seamlessly wrapped in large droplet-like curved glass. The traditional “Vermilion Orange” will be used as an accent at the inter-car connections.
Inside, multiple seat types will be available to choose from depending on purpose and mood, and large windows will beautifully frame the nature-rich scenery along the line. It will also be capable of through-service onto the Hakone Tozan Line.
COA First-Class Architect Office was involved in formulating the development concept. Nippon Sharyo will be responsible for the train design. The new train will replace the EXE fleet and succeed the VSE fleet.
