Japanese Foreign Ministry Issues Wide-Area Alert on Terrorism in Europe and North America
The Embassy of Japan in Thailand and the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia have issued a safety advisory following military clashes near the border between Thailand and Cambodia.
After full-scale fighting broke out between the Thai and Cambodian armed forces in July, a ceasefire agreement was reached, and in October a joint declaration toward peace was signed. Although incidents such as landmine explosions and sporadic gunfire continued to occur near the border, they had not escalated into full-scale combat between the two militaries. However, on December 7, fighting broke out again, and tensions along the border have rapidly escalated.
The Thai government has once again issued evacuation orders to residents of the northern border areas with Cambodia, including Sisaket Province, Surin Province, Buri Ram Province, and Ubon Ratchathani Province. The Government of Japan has also issued a Level 3 danger alert (advising against all travel) for areas near the Thailand–Cambodia border.
