San Francisco International Airport Approves Waymo Fully Driverless Car Service
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has approved the launch of a fully driverless car service provided by Waymo.
With the goal of ensuring safety in autonomous driving operations, the airport is entering the final phase of a pilot program that began in September 2025, and will start offering the service to a portion of Waymo users. The pilot program is divided into three phases: it initially began with autonomous driving accompanied by a safety operator, and was later expanded to fully driverless operations for Waymo employees and certain airport staff.
Pickups and drop-offs will be available at the curbside of the Rental Car Center, which is accessible via the AirTrain at SFO. Over the course of several months, the service area will be gradually expanded, with the aim of eventually extending service to the passenger terminals and other on-airport facilities.
Waymo is an autonomous vehicle development company under Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google. Development began at Google in 2009 and was later spun off into a separate company.
