New Narita Airport Interchange Project Approved on Metropolitan Inter-City Expressway
Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has approved the launch of a new project to construct a provisional “Narita Airport Area Interchange (IC)” near Narita Airport.
The interchange will be located between Ken-O Narita IC and Tako IC on the Metropolitan Inter-City Expressway (Ken-O Expressway). East Nippon Expressway Company (NEXCO East) and Chiba Prefecture will be the project operators. It will be a full-access interchange available in all directions for all vehicle types, and will operate 24 hours a day.
At Narita International Airport in Chiba Prefecture, projects such as the construction of a new Runway C and the development of a new cargo area are underway. With the full opening of the Ken-O Expressway, access between Narita Airport and the Saitama area, as well as the Haneda Airport area in the Tokyo metropolitan region, will be improved. This is expected to enhance logistics efficiency and strengthen Japan’s international competitiveness in air cargo. The travel time between the new cargo area and the Ken-O Expressway will be reduced by 9 minutes.
