Japan Airlines (JAL) and Japan Transocean Air (JTA) will substantially increase fuel surcharges for international flights on tickets issued from May onward.
The airlines levy fuel surcharges according to the amount obtained by converting into Japanese yen the two‑month average market price of Singapore kerosene aviation fuel using the two‑month average foreign exchange rate. For the period from February to March 2026, the average market price of Singapore kerosene was 146.99 US dollars per barrel, and the exchange rate was 156.99 yen to 1 US dollar, resulting in 23,076 yen after conversion into yen. Taking into account the government’s emergency measures to mitigate sudden changes, they will lower the applicable tier by one level.
In addition, while the revised surcharge amounts based on the average fuel market price over the most recent two months had previously been applied to tickets issued from the month after next, this will be changed so that they apply from tickets issued in the following month. They have also added an additional table of applicable conditions.
For itineraries departing from Japan on tickets issued between May 1 and June 30, the one‑way fuel surcharge amounts on each route will be as follows: 3,000 yen for South Korea, the Russian Far East, and Okinawa/Naha–Taipei/Kaohsiung routes; 7,400 yen for East Asia excluding South Korea and Mongolia; 9,500 yen for Guam, Palau, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Russia (Irkutsk); 15,500 yen for Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Russia (Novosibirsk); 17,800 yen for Hawaii, Indonesia, India, and Sri Lanka; and 29,000 yen for North America (excluding Hawaii), Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania.
