Tokaido Shinkansen May Suspend Services Due to Typhoon No. 6
On June 5, Tokyo Monorail opened part of the new station building under construction at Hamamatsucho Station to the press. The new ticket gates will enter service from June 13.
On the 3rd floor of the new station building, a Central Gate, North Gate, and JR transfer gate will be installed, and the areas inside the gates will be connected by a concourse. The concourse is designed with the image of a theater foyer, using red tiles reminiscent of a red carpet, wall colors that create a sense of solidity, and linear ceiling lighting to heighten the excitement of travel. The lighting color temperature changes depending on the time of day. At the center of the concourse, a square-shaped light fixture inspired by a chandelier has been installed.
As with the previous layout, on the platform level the east side (seaside) will be used exclusively for boarding, and the west side (mountain side) will be used exclusively for alighting. All existing stairs, escalators, and elevators will be taken out of service, and new stairs, escalators, and elevators directly connecting to the 3rd-floor concourse will be installed on the north side. Train boarding and alighting positions will remain unchanged.
With the start of service at the new station building, the current 3rd-floor Central Gate and 2nd-floor South Gate will be closed as of June 12.
At Hamamatsucho Station in Tokyo, five companies including Tokyo Monorail and JR East are jointly working to enhance the functionality of the station area and develop a pedestrian network. In spring 2027, the JR Hamamatsucho Station North Gate, which is currently at ground level, will be relocated to the 3rd floor, and an east–west free passage crossing over the JR lines will be constructed. The monorail’s North Gate will be connected to this passage, allowing passengers to move smoothly and on the same level between the two sets of ticket gates.
The full opening of the new station building is expected to take place around 2030.
