JAL and JTA to Raise International Fuel Surcharges for Tickets Issued from February 2026
Japan Airlines (JAL) has revealed that it filed improper labor cost claims under a publicly solicited project of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), a National Research and Development Agency of Japan. JAL submitted a report to NEDO today.
According to an internal investigation, in five projects related to the “Project for the Social Implementation of Next-Generation Air Mobility,” conducted between fiscal 2021 and fiscal 2026, the company calculated employee working hours, which are required for claiming and applying for labor costs, in a way that did not reflect the actual situation.
After formulating measures to prevent recurrence, JAL will reapply for labor costs limited to working hours that can be substantiated by objective evidence, and will return approximately 2,852.1 million yen of the difference out of around 3,212.3 million yen in labor costs that have already been accepted. In addition, the airline will voluntarily withdraw from NEDO projects that are currently ongoing.
