West Nippon Expressway Company (NEXCO West Japan) has closed sections of expressways in Kumamoto Prefecture following the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake, which occurred on July 28.
The sections that remain closed are between Mashiki-Kumamoto Airport Interchange (IC) and Ebino IC on the Kyushu Expressway; between Yatsushiro Junction (JCT) and Hinagu IC on the Minami-Kyushu Expressway; and between Kashima JCT and the Mashiki Mainline Toll Gate on the Kyushu Chuo Expressway. The total length of the closures is 110.8 kilometers.
Damage in these sections includes damaged bridge joints, shifted girders, steps and gaps in road surfaces, road-surface steps in earthwork sections, cracks, and uplift. Detailed damage inspections and emergency restoration work are underway, but as of 11 a.m. on July 29, there is no estimate for when the closures will be lifted.
