The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has elevated the danger level for certain regions in Lebanon.
The ministry has raised the travel advisory for southern Akkar Governorate, southwestern Baalbek-Hermel Governorate, the city of Tripoli in North Lebanon Governorate, and areas outside the southern suburbs of Beirut (Dahieh District) to Level 2 (“Avoid Non-Essential Travel”). Other areas are already at Level 3 (“Avoid All Travel”).
Since October 8th, there have been regular exchanges of artillery fire between the Israeli military and forces in Lebanon near the southern Lebanese-Israeli border. This has resulted in casualties and damage, including among civilians.
Given the historical context, including the closure of Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport due to airstrikes by the Israeli military in 2006, the ministry decided to raise the advisory level as a rapid deterioration of the situation is conceivable.
