JR East to Suspend Some Greater Tokyo Area Lines on September 22 Due to Typhoon No. 25
Keio Corporation, the Metropolitan Intercity Railway Company (Tsukuba Express), Yurikamome, and Enoshima Electric Railway will launch a service on October 7 that allows passengers to earn V Points through “credit card ride,” a fare payment service using contactless credit cards and other payment methods.
The service will be offered in collaboration with V Point Marketing, Sumitomo Mitsui Card, Visa Worldwide Japan, and QUADRAC. When V Point members use credit card ride on eligible lines, they will earn “ride points” of 1 point for every 200 yen (including tax) in fares, in addition to the usual “payment points” earned through card transactions. This will be the first service in Japan to award V Points for using public transportation.
All lines and stations operated by the four companies will be eligible. The initiative will be conducted as a two-year demonstration experiment. The companies will consider continuing the service based on an assessment of usage and its effectiveness. When passengers travel onto other operators’ lines through through-services, the portions of the journey on other companies’ lines will not be eligible for points.
Only Visa-branded cards are eligible for point awards. For Visa-branded cards issued by Sumitomo Mitsui Card, payment points are normally 0.5% (up to 8.0% when riding using contactless payment on a smartphone), while ride points are 0.5%. For Visa-branded cards issued by other companies, ride points of 0.5% will be added to the points set by each card issuer.
To use the service, users must begin the process through “Earn by Riding” in the “Earn and Use” menu of the V Point app, then log in or register as a new member on the Q-move website and link their V Member Number with their Q-move member ID. Points will be awarded around the 10th of the month following the month in which credit card ride was used, based on the total monthly amount spent.
