International Snow Sculpture Contest Held at Sapporo Snow Festival – Featuring Chefs from Royal Hawaiian Hotel
From February 4th to 11th, the “Sapporo Snow Festival” is being held at Odori Park and other locations in Sapporo, Hokkaido, featuring the “International Snow Sculpture Contest.”
Teams from various countries, regions, and cities around the world create snow sculptures during the festival. This year, 9 teams from sister cities and other locales are participating.
From Hawaii, chefs and sushi artisans from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, located along Waikiki Beach, are competing, expressing the theme of “The Azure Sea’s Stingrays,” depicting stingrays swimming. Indonesia is portraying “Komodo Island,” while Poland is creating “The Great Hunter of Fairy Tales,” representing characters from fairy tales, showcasing a variety of unique snow sculptures.
The creation period is from February 3rd to 6th, and visitors can observe the snow sculptures being crafted at the Odori venue, 11-chome. The award ceremony will take place on February 7th at 11 am at the snow HTB Plaza in Odori venue, 8-chome.
The International Snow Sculpture Contest started in 1974. It is the only event during the Snow Festival where visitors can closely watch the creation of the snow sculptures. The last contest before this one was held in February 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic, with Thailand winning the competition.
