JR Kyoto Station to Develop New West Side Gate and Passage for Congestion Relief by Fiscal Year 2031
JR West and the City of Kyoto have announced the construction of a new overhead station building and a free passage on the west side of Kyoto Station.
The new overhead station building will be connected to the west side of the current north-south free passage, and will include ticket gates for the various JR lines. The free passage connects these gates with the north side of the station, and leads to a mixed-use facility being planned as part of the redevelopment project by Japan Post at the Kyoto Central Post Office. The construction cost is estimated at approximately 19.5 billion yen, and the service is scheduled to start in the fiscal year 2031.
Due to the increase in tourists, Kyoto Station experiences localized congestion depending on the time of day and season. JR West and the City of Kyoto intend to disperse the flow of people by securing new traffic routes within the station premises, thereby ensuring the safety and comfort of station users.
