Shinkansen Bulk Tickets to Be Discontinued by End of 2024 Due to Shift Towards Online Reservations
JR Central has announced the discontinuation of the ‘Shinkansen Bulk Tickets’ for the entire Tokaido Shinkansen line.
Currently, JR Central has set up Shinkansen bulk tickets for free seating in ordinary cars for certain sections of the Tokaido Shinkansen. The sale of currently available Shinkansen bulk tickets (for ordinary car free seating) across all sections will end on December 22nd. The last day of use is set for March 31st, 2025.
Both JR Central and JR West have been gradually ending the sale of bulk tickets for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. The bulk tickets for the Tokyo-Nagoya and Shin-Osaka station section of the Shinkansen ended with the batch released on March 31st, 2022. Moreover, bulk tickets for reserved seats in ordinary cars and Shinkansen bulk tickets within the Sanyo Shinkansen line have already ceased sales.
JR East has also ended the sale of ‘Shinkansen Bulk Tickets’ for lines such as the Tohoku Shinkansen. With the rise of online reservations and ticket-less services, the era of ‘Shinkansen Bulk Tickets’ will come to an end.
