JR East to Operate Overnight Trains on 7 Lines in the Tokyo Area from New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day
Delays and Cancellations Possible on Tokyo Metropolitan Area’s Local Lines Due to Expected Snowfall Early Next Week
JR East has announced that significant delays, destination changes, cancellations, and suspensions may occur, especially on local lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area such as the Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, and Chuo Line, due to snowfall expected after February 5th.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, from February 5th to 6th, heavy snowfall that could reach warning levels is possible in the mountainous and hilly areas of the Tama region in Tokyo. Snow accumulation is also possible on flat land depending on the path and development of a low-pressure system.
JR East has laid out their operational plans during snowfall within the metropolitan area: “normal operation” if the snow melts quickly, “reduced services” depending on the situation if a light layer of snow covers the ground, and “reduced services” if the snow accumulates significantly on the ground.
The company is urging passengers to check the latest operational information on their website or apps, as travel times to destinations may significantly increase depending on the snowfall situation. (The image is for illustration purposes only).
