Virgin Australia has expressed its intention to be the first in Australia to allow in-cabin pets. Following regulatory approval, the service is aimed to start within 12 months.
In a survey conducted among Facebook followers in 2021, 85% of respondents supported the idea, and a recent survey showed that nearly 70% were in favor, with 57% stating they would fly more regularly if the service was introduced. It is said that 70% of households in Australia have pets.
The service will be limited to small dogs and cats on certain domestic routes, in designated rows and with a limited number of pets allowed. Pets must be kept in approved carriers and placed under the seat in front of the owner. There will be an additional fee. Cargo transport services for pets will continue to be available as before.
