Qantas Airways has launched a service from Sydney to Port Moresby on April 1.
The service operates twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, utilizing Boeing 737 aircraft. The flight duration is four hours from Sydney and three hours and fifty-five minutes from Port Moresby. This complements the once-daily round trip from Brisbane to Port Moresby, cutting at least three hours off the travel time when compared to connecting flights.
Qantas Airways initiated flights to Papua New Guinea in the 1940s, establishing a route from Sydney to Port Moresby to Lae in 1950. By 1959, it served as a refueling stop for flights to Hong Kong. This marks the resumption of the service after 50 years.
The same route is also operated twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, by Air Niugini.
