JR Group’s Six Companies to Introduce Discount System for Individuals with Mental Disabilities in April 2025
The six companies of the JR Group will introduce a discount system for individuals with mental disabilities on April 1, 2025.
This discount applies to those possessing a Mental Disability Health and Welfare ID Card issued by local governments, specifically with an entry in the passenger railway fare reduction section indicating either Type 1 or Type 2.
Type 1 individuals with mental disabilities and their caregivers are eligible for a 50% discount on regular tickets, coupon tickets, ordinary express tickets, and commuter passes (excluding children), while those under the age of 12 with Type 2 disabilities and their caregivers can receive the discount on commuter passes (same as above). The discount on regular tickets (only for distances over 100 km) also applies to solo travels of both Type 1 and Type 2 individuals with mental disabilities.
Only one caregiver is allowed per eligible individual, and the caregiver must purchase a ticket for the same travel segment as the ID cardholder. Local governments are expected to add a passenger railway fare reduction section to the Mental Disability Health and Welfare ID Cards in the future.
Other railway companies have also announced the introduction of similar discount systems for individuals with mental disabilities.
