Dubai International Airport Returns to Normal Operations After Record Rainfall Disruptions
Dubai International Airport has announced its return to normal operations.
On April 16th local time, Dubai experienced heavy rainfall that led to the flooding of the airport and surrounding roads, causing significant disruptions. A total of 2,155 flights were canceled, and 115 flights were diverted. The incident resulted in passengers being stranded due to missed connections, leading to a temporary restriction on accepting departing and connecting passengers due to flooding on the airport’s surrounding roads.
According to Dubai Airports, the operator of Dubai International Airport, it has returned to its standard operation of approximately 1,400 flights per day. The drainage of the roads around the airport has been completed, and the transportation of delayed checked luggage is expected to resume within 24 hours. Emirates, the largest airline based at Dubai International Airport, had organized a workforce for sorting and matching approximately 30,000 pieces of luggage.
Accommodation allocations for all those in need were completed by April 19th. Despite initial logistical challenges, 75,000 food items were also distributed.
Dubai International Airport is expecting to handle 88.8 million passengers this year, surpassing its 2019 figures.
