Swiss International Air Lines Completes Application of Shark Skin Film on All Boeing 777 Aircraft
Swiss International Air Lines has completed the application of shark skin film on all its Boeing 777 aircraft.
The first aircraft equipped with this film took off in October 2022, and work had been progressing on long-haul operational aircraft. By applying a film that replicates the hydrodynamic skin of a shark to parts of the fuselage and engines, it is possible to reduce air resistance by about 1%. In 2022, this was able to reduce fuel consumption by more than 2,200 tons and carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 7,100 tons.
The “AeroSHARK” technology was jointly developed by Lufthansa Technik and the coatings manufacturer BASF. The application process takes about a week and requires high precision.
Swiss International Air Lines is also considering expanding the use of this technology to long-haul operational aircraft.
