Japan Airlines (JAL) unveiled the ‘JAL MyakuMyaku JET No.2’ (Boeing 787-8, Registration: JA823J) on June 2nd, a special livery aircraft commemorating the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, at a hangar at Haneda Airport. The aircraft will begin operations on international routes primarily in Asia starting from June 3rd.
The aircraft features 30 business class and 176 economy class seats, totaling 206 seats, and is decorated throughout with 70 decals including images of ‘MyakuMyaku’, the official mascot of the Osaka-Kansai Expo, and the Expo logo. The decals were applied both in Japan and Singapore, and the aircraft arrived at Haneda Airport at 10:38 AM on May 31st.
The inaugural flight will be the JL77 from Tokyo/Haneda to Manila on June 3rd at 1:55 AM. Subsequent routes will include Tokyo/Haneda to Dalian, Shanghai/Pudong, Seoul/Gimpo, Taipei/Songshan, Ho Chi Minh, Tokyo/Narita to Ho Chi Minh, Bangkok, and Osaka/Kansai to Bangkok, Taipei/Taoyuan, among others, with operations running until around August 2025. Passengers will be served drinks in special design paper cups (six varieties).
At the unveiling, flight attendants wearing the fourth-generation uniform used during the 1970 Osaka Expo made an appearance along with MyakuMyaku, adding charm to the event.
This is the second aircraft featuring a special livery for the Osaka-Kansai Expo, with the first being J-AIR’s Embraer 190 (Registration: JA252J), which has been operating on domestic routes as ‘JAL MyakuMyaku JET’ since November 28, 2023. At the unveiling, JAL’s President Mitsuko Tottori expressed her desire to further boost the excitement for the Expo, saying, “We aim to contribute to the Expo enthusiasm by operating the MyakuMyaku JET on international flights. We hope to appeal to various places in Asia and bring many customers to the event.” A third aircraft, utilizing JAL’s domestic fleet, is also planned to be introduced.
The Osaka-Kansai Expo will be held from April 13 to October 13, 2025, in Yumeshima, Osaka. According to the Expo’s website, MyakuMyaku is a mysterious creature born from the fusion of cells and water. The red parts represent cells, and the blue parts represent pure water.
