Experience the Semi-Private Feel for 1,200 Yen—Is There Already a Battle for the Newly Introduced “P Seats” on the Tokaido Shinkansen?
Doctor Yellow to Retire Gradually from January 2025, Replaced by N700S Functionality
JR Central and JR West have announced that they will end operations of the Shinkansen’s electrical and track diagnostic vehicle, known as ‘Doctor Yellow’, within a few years due to aging. They have decided not to manufacture a dedicated successor vehicle.
JR Central’s 923 series 0th generation (T4 formation) will end operations in January 2025, and JR West’s 923 series 3000th generation (T5 formation) is targeted to end operations after 2027. JR Central plans to conduct experience rides, photo sessions, and sell commemorative merchandise in conjunction with the end of operations.
The T4 formation began operations in September 2001, and the T5 formation in 2005. Approximately every ten days, they operate alternately, conducting inspections of the Tokaido & Sanyo Shinkansen tracks. Until 2027, inspections will be carried out solely by the T5 formation, after which, the diagnostic functionality will be replaced by those installed in the N700S.
