‘Having Darvish on the Team is Beneficial for San Diego,’ Says San Diego Tourism Authority President and CEO Julie Coker
San Diego, a beach city in California, USA, is the second most populous city in the state after Los Angeles. Japan Airlines (JAL) operates direct flights between Japan and San Diego.
The home of the San Diego Padres, where Yu Darvish plays, has seen an increasing trend in Japanese tourists. We asked Julie Coker, President and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority, about her expectations for the Japanese market.
-Your views on the current Japanese market
Indeed, the market has not fully recovered, but it’s undeniably coming back. Currently, we have four direct flights a week, but this is expected to increase to seven days a week in July. We value the Japanese market highly and have organized this event to welcome Japanese travelers.
-About Japanese tourists watching MLB games
It’s clear that having Darvish on the team is beneficial for San Diego. It’s wonderful that Japanese travelers come to enjoy American baseball, and with the Padres being very popular, there are many Japanese visitors at the stadium.
-Beyond MLB games, what experiences do you want Japanese tourists to have?
We would like them to enjoy arts and culture. There are many arts and cultural facilities, including Balboa Park and its numerous sites, as well as the Mingei International Museum. Additionally, there’s shopping and outdoor activities to enjoy.
-A message to Japanese travelers
San Diego is one of the most inclusive and welcoming destinations in America. We are grateful to Japanese guests who choose San Diego for their next vacation and welcome them.
