AirAsia Plans to Launch Flights from Japan to LA and San Francisco, Reveals CEO Tony Fernandes
Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A (formerly known as AirAsia Group), has reiterated his intention to launch flights from Japan to the mainland USA.
This was disclosed during an interview in Windsor, just outside London, UK, at the “World Airline Awards 2024” ceremony presented by the airline rating agency Skytrax.
CEO Fernandes mentioned, “We have no plans to resume our Honolulu route; however, we are planning to fly to Los Angeles and San Francisco from Japan. Our team in Japan is currently working on it.”
In addition to these routes, there are plans to link Kobe, Hiroshima, Nagoya, and Sendai in Japan with Bangkok, Bali, Phuket, and Indonesia using single-aisle long-range aircraft, as shown here.
In February, alongside a visit by Airbus’ CEO of Commercial Aircraft, Christian Scherer, to AirAsia’s headquarters, the ambition to become the first low-cost network carrier was unveiled. It included intentions of flying to three North American cities from Japan, including Vancouver, using the Airbus A330neo.
Moreover, “Once we reach America, the only place left is Europe. Then, if we go to South America, we can cover every continent,” Fernandes expressed his ambition. In November, they will enter Africa for the first time with flights to Nairobi and have plans to resume operations in Eastern Europe.
