Korean Air to Hire Cabin Crew at Narita Base for First Time in Four Years
FDA Announces New Flight Attendant Uniforms Designed by Junko Koshino, to be Introduced Around September
Fuji Dream Airlines (FDA) unveiled new flight attendant uniforms at Komaki Airport on July 18th. It’s the first uniform refresh in about 11 years, designed by fashion designer Junko Koshino. The new uniforms are set to be introduced around September.
The third iteration follows the charcoal gray original introduced at the airline’s launch in July 2009 and the current second iteration in use since October 2013. Koshino’s new design embodies the concept of “beauty in opposition,” pairing the corporate color, Dream Red, with charcoal gray, similar to the original.
The tops offer a selection between a single type of jacket and two types of cut-sew with different color schemes designed as inners. The asymmetrical design features non-symmetrical necklines, hem shapes, and color blocking. For bottoms, flight attendants can choose between pants and skirts, allowing for personal preference in styling. Unlike the common scarves used by other airlines, a lightweight stole has been chosen for neckwear. The apron worn during in-flight service is a collared type, designed to integrate seamlessly with the uniform.
The tops are made of knit material, and stretchable fabric is used for the jackets and skirts, ensuring both mobility and comfort onboard. From an environmental standpoint, the materials include partly plant-derived polyester fibers, and a system has been introduced to collect and recycle the uniforms after use.
The unveiling was held at Komaki Airport’s hangar, where eight flight attendants showcased the new uniforms in various combinations, emerging from the silver #10 aircraft (Embraer 175, registration: JA10FJ) and walking in front of the aircraft in a fashion show style. Koshino requested the use of a silver aircraft to contrast with the charcoal gray uniforms, according to FDA.
Koshino, appearing alongside the #10 aircraft with flight attendants, expressed her hope for the uniforms, saying, “As you can see, the uniforms are very impactful. I hope they become fun and unique uniforms that we can be proud of globally, and keep entertaining everyone. I’m also participating as a cheerleader for them.”
The uniform refresh is part of the 15th-anniversary project of launching services, celebrated on July 23. A project team of 10 flight attendants was formed in July 2023, holding a design competition with the concept of “transition to a new era, challenge, leap, and refinement.” Out of 8 companies and 23 submissions, Koshino’s design was chosen.
FDA’s chairman, Yohei Suzuki, commented, “Wearing a uniform can significantly impact a person’s mentality. With Koshino’s excellent design, I hope our flight attendants will serve our customers with a fresh attitude and our sincere hospitality.”
FDA also mentioned considering refreshing the ground staff uniforms in the future.
