Yamanote Line and Keihin-Tohoku Line Major Suspension on April 19-20: Caution for Weekend Outings
JR Central has developed a new construction method for major renovations on the Tokaido Shinkansen, with work to begin in September.
Since 2013, from a preventive maintenance perspective, major renovation work on civil engineering structures has been underway. Until now, for concrete bridges, a construction method that involves covering protruding slabs, which are parts designed to reduce cracks caused by the aging of concrete, with high corrosion-resistant plated steel, was employed.
A new method has been developed that entails covering the surface of the protruding slabs with a carbon fiber sheet and applying a surface protection material. The weight of the sheet is less than one-sixtieth of that of steel plates, making it easier to handle, and it can be installed by a single person, which improves work efficiency. This method is expected to reduce costs by about 30% and shorten the construction period, as it eliminates the need for major demolition or restoration work, even when there are buildings under the elevated tracks.
