Japan Airlines (JAL) has been using “B100 fuel” for towing tractors at Miyako Airport since August 19.
“B100 fuel” is a 100% biodiesel fuel concentration, being the first of its kind introduced at remote island airports in Japan. It is being used in two towing tractors.
The raw material for this fuel comes from vegetable-based waste cooking oil collected from eateries and households on Miyako Island. Atlas is responsible for collecting waste oil on the island and manufacturing the fuel. Since the plants used as raw materials for the cooking oil absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, it is possible to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions over their entire lifecycle. Compared to using regular diesel fuel, it is estimated that this can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2.62 kilograms per liter.
