JR East Reveals Details on the Disconnected Coupling of the Tohoku Shinkansen Hayabusa and Komachi No. 6
JR East has disclosed details concerning an incident that happened today, September 19th at around 8:07 AM, where the coupling between the Tohoku Shinkansen trains, “Hayabusa” and “Komachi No. 6” became disconnected while traveling between Furukawa and Sendai stations.
While traversing the said section, the emergency brakes were automatically engaged, bringing the trains to a stop. Upon inspection by the driver, it was confirmed that the coupling between “Hayabusa” and “Komachi” had come apart. At the time of the incident, the trains were traveling at a speed of approximately 315 kilometers per hour, and the distance between the stopped trains was about 300 meters. No abnormalities were found in the appearance of the couplers or wheels. The “Hayabusa No. 6” (a 10-car E5 series formation) starting from Morioka Station, and the “Komachi No. 6” (a 7-car E6 series formation) starting from Akita Station, were combined as usual at Morioka Station.
An emergency visual inspection of the couplings’ exterior will be conducted on all 96 formations that operate in combined service. Moving forward, an investigation into the cause will be carried out, and necessary measures will be taken.
After conducting a vehicle inspection, the Tohoku Shinkansen resumed operations on all lines at 1:12 PM. As a result, 72 trains were suspended, 35 trains were delayed by up to 351 minutes, affecting approximately 45,000 people.
