Yamanashi Prefecture Announces Study Results on the Commercialization of the Mt. Fuji Climbing Railway Concept
Yamanashi Prefecture has published the results of its study on the commercialization of the Mt. Fuji Climbing Railway concept.
The scheme for the construction and operation of the railway determined that a “vertical separation” model is suitable, projecting 3 million annual users and an investment of 148.6 billion yen over 40 years. Even if the number of users were to decrease by half and the investment cost were to increase by 50%, the operation would remain profitable. The project is expected to generate economic effects of 1.56 trillion yen and create employment for approximately 120,000 people over 40 years.
The proposed extension is about 25-28 kilometers, with base stations in areas around Fujiyoshida City such as Fuji-Q Highland and Lake Kawaguchi, and the fifth station envisaged in areas dotted with parking lots and rest houses. Intermediate stations will also be established.
The study was conducted with subsidies from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and was undertaken by Deloitte Tohmatsu Financial Advisory.
