Tokyo Metropolitan Government to Test Fuel Cell Tug Cars for Aircraft
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is converting aircraft tow cars into fuel cell vehicles for trial operations and to verify their effectiveness.
This is part of an initiative to support the early implementation of fuel cell mobility at airports and other locations, conducted in collaboration with JALUX. The project involves vehicle modification, over four months of trial operation, and the verification of implementation effects. The operations will be handled by Japan Airlines (JAL), vehicle maintenance and hydrogen refueling by JAL Airtech, and vehicle modification by Tajima Motor Corporation. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will cover the costs related to vehicle modification and the trial operations.
This initiative aims to promote the development and commercialization of ground support vehicles for aircraft powered by fuel cells and other means, while also stimulating the demand for hydrogen in the airport’s coastal area. The project is scheduled to conclude on March 31, 2026.
