JAL Introduces Japan’s First Electric High Lift and Belt Loaders

Japan Airlines (JAL) will start the full-scale operation of electric high lift loaders and electric belt loaders at Haneda Airport from December 17.

The high lift loader is a piece of equipment that works in conjunction with a towing tractor, which pulls containers and pallets of baggage, mail, and cargo specially designed for aircraft, to load and unload these containers and pallets into and out of the aircraft. The belt loader is equipped with a power conveyor and is involved in the loading and unloading of passenger baggage and cargo from the bulk cargo compartment located at the rear of the passenger aircraft.

The high lift loader is made by TREPEL, and the belt loader is by EINSA, both with a track record of adoption worldwide. They can handle operations for about 1 to 2 days on a full charge. It is stated that these initiatives will reduce carbon dioxide emissions to zero compared to traditional methods and improve noise levels.

The introduction of electric high lift and belt loaders marks the first such initiative by a Japanese airline. Additionally, the company has introduced electric towing tractors in the fiscal year 2022.
