NEXCO Companies Postpone Overhaul of Midnight Discount Timing to Around July

NEXCO East Japan, NEXCO Central Japan, and NEXCO West Japan, the three expressway companies, have announced a postponement of the review of their midnight discount timing to around July.

The postponement is due to the need for time to establish the necessary systems for applying discounts to tolls during the discounted time frame, making the initial operation start time of around the end of fiscal year 2024 difficult to achieve. A specific start date will be announced after further assessment of the system’s readiness.

With the review of the midnight discounts, only the tolls for usage during the discounted hours will be reduced by 30%, and the progressive reduction system for journeys over 400 kilometers will be expanded. A five-year mitigation measure will also be introduced. To discourage behaviors such as speeding with the aim of increasing eligible distances, a cap will be placed on the distance eligible for discounts.
