UK Expands Electronic Travel Authorisation to Include Japanese Citizens, Effective Today
The UK Home Office has expanded the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to Japanese citizens, with the application starting from today, January 8.
Travelers from visa-exempt countries who are visiting for tourism, visiting relatives, studying for up to six months, staying under the Creative Worker visa concession for up to three months, staying for permitted paid engagements, or transiting (including not entering the country) will need to apply for this authorisation before travelling.
The fee is £10, and the decision is made within three business days. The ETA is valid for two years or until the expiration of the passport, whichever comes first. Once obtained, it allows for multiple entries during its validity period. However, a new application is required if it expires or the holder gets a new passport.
It has already been implemented for travelers from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). From March 5, it will be expanded to include European travelers, with the requirement becoming mandatory from April 2.
Those who already have a visa, residence, work, or study permit for the UK, holders of British Overseas Territories passports, diplomats, and their families, among others, are exempt from this requirement.
