Fukuoka Airport to Commence Operations on Its Second Runway on March 20
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has announced the commencement of operations for Fukuoka Airport’s second runway starting on March 20.
Currently, the airport operates with just one runway, making it the airport with the highest number of passengers and flight operations among Japan’s single-runway airports. The construction of the second runway has been ongoing since the fiscal year 2015, with a total project cost of 164.3 billion yen.
This will increase the current runway capacity from 176,000 operations per year to 188,000 operations. Taking into consideration advancements in approach technology and demand trends, an increase to a maximum of 211,000 operations is also anticipated.
Going forward, the remaining construction will be completed, followed by flight inspections of lighting facilities, aviation law procedures, and informing airlines, among other activities, before commencing operations.
