JAL Supports Commercialization of Space Tours by Iwatani Giken’s Balloon
Japan Airlines (JAL) has joined the “OPEN UNIVERSE PROJECT,” a project aimed at commercializing and popularizing space tours by balloon developed by Iwatani Giken. A basic agreement was signed on December 10.
Utilizing its expertise and assets cultivated in the airline transport business, JAL has announced its contribution in various areas such as experience design, technology development, and personnel training. It will support the commercialization in cooperation with JAL Engineering, responsible for aircraft maintenance, and other co-creation partners. To date, JTB and Asahi Group Japan have participated as co-creation partners.
In July 2024, Iwatani Giken plans to conduct a manned free flight test using a pressurized cabin for two passengers, intended for commercial flights. This test is expected to reach an altitude of 20,816 meters, marking a first in Japan.
