Lufthansa Group Completes Acquisition of Shares in ITA Airways
Lufthansa Group has acquired 41% of the shares in ITA Airways.
In May 2023, the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance agreed that Lufthansa Group would acquire shares in ITA Airways. Following the approval from regulatory authorities including the European Commission (EC), the acquisition was completed. The remaining 59% of the shares continue to be held by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance. A capital increase of 325 million euros was also underwritten.
Italy has become the biggest market after the United States for the group’s airlines, excluding their home bases. Rome/Fiumicino will be the southernmost hub airport in the group. Milan/Linate will also play a significant role in the group.
Within a few weeks, it will be possible to earn miles in Lufthansa Group’s Miles & More mileage program, along with benefits such as earning and exchanging miles, code-sharing, and lounge access. ITA Airways will leave SkyTeam and join Star Alliance.
ITA Airways operates a fleet of 99 Airbus aircraft, including Airbus A350-900s and A330-900s, and operates flights to 70 cities worldwide from its bases in Rome/Fiumicino and Milan/Linate. The number of passengers is expected to reach approximately 18 million in 2024.
Jörg Eberhart has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Lorenzo Maggio as the Chief Strategy & Integration Officer (CSIO), and Michael Trestl as the ITA Implementation Officer. A press conference is scheduled for February 3 in Rome, where further information will be announced.
