The redevelopment plan for Sapporo Station front will undergo a major review, aiming for completion in fiscal year 2034.
Originally, the project was expected to be completed by fiscal year 2028. However, considering the rising construction costs, countermeasures have been under consideration since the winter of 2023. Although the building scale revisions and construction period extensions were taken into account, the estimated construction cost was shown to be more than double the initial plan, amounting to approximately 370 billion yen.
To address this, the development area will be divided into two sections, with phased development for each block to minimize overlapping construction periods. The same-sized West 2nd Block as the former Esta will be developed first with an aim for completion by fiscal year 2030, and West 1st Block will aim for fiscal year 2034.
The West 2nd Block will feature commercial facilities and a bus terminal, as well as the Station Front Square Atrium connecting the station’s south exit plaza to the building. It will also include advanced transportation node functions such as an east-west pedestrian network.
