Japan Airlines (JAL) retired its first Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, JA731J, on May 27. This marks the second retirement of this model, following the JA734J, which ended operations in August 2024.
JA731J was delivered to JAL as the first 777-300ER on June 15, 2004, and had its inaugural flight from Tokyo Narita to Singapore on July 1 of the same year. The current cabin configuration includes 8 seats in First Class “JAL SUITE” with a “1-2-1” arrangement, 49 seats in Business Class “JAL SKY SUITE” with a “2-3-2” arrangement, 40 seats in Premium Economy Class “JAL SKY PREMIUM” with a “2-3-2” arrangement, and 147 seats in Economy Class “JAL SKY WIDER” with a “3-3-3” arrangement, totaling 244 seats.
The last flight was on May 26 from Tokyo Haneda to Shanghai Pudong as JL89, returning on May 27 from Shanghai Pudong to Tokyo Haneda as JL80. Flight JL89 departed from gate 122 at Tokyo Haneda at 5:29 PM on the 26th, took off at 5:52 PM, and arrived in Shanghai Pudong at 7:51 PM. The crew included 2 operating crew members and 12 cabin crew, and there were 228 passengers (including 1 infant).
JL80 departed Shanghai Pudong at 9:16 AM on the 27th, took off at 9:44 AM, and arrived at gate 111 at Tokyo Haneda at 12:57 PM. The crew included 2 operating crew members and 11 cabin crew, and there were 137 passengers (including 1 infant).
At Haneda Airport, stakeholders greeted the arrival of JL80 with a message board saying “Thank you, JA731J” to honor its 21-year service. As of the arrival of JL89 on the 26th, the aircraft had 10,604 total cycles and 87,610.85 total flight hours. It is expected to undergo retirement maintenance over several months before leaving the country.
JAL is gradually retiring its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in line with the introduction of Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The first retirement, JA734J, which was the fourth aircraft, ended operations with the JL52 flight from Sydney to Haneda on August 20, 2024, and departed for its buyer in Roswell, New Mexico on September 19. With the retirement of JA731J, JAL’s 777-300ER fleet is now down to 11 aircraft.
