JR East Opens Temporary Ticket Offices at Midori no Madoguchi
JR East will gradually introduce new reserved seat ticket machines starting in July.
The top screen will feature purpose-specific menus such as “Buy ticket” and “Change ticket,” which were well-received in prior monitor surveys. The button configuration and layout have also been revised for a more intuitive display. The screens of existing machines will be updated in October.
The functionality will be expanded to allow the purchase of Shinkansen tickets from reserved seat ticket machines, even when traveling on conventional lines with Mobile Suica. After October, the machines will also support ticket refunds in the event of train cancellations. The eligible trains and ticket types for refunds will be extended for delays exceeding 2 hours.
By around spring 2026, it will be possible to issue reserved “Japan Rail Pass” tickets through new machines equipped with passport readers at airport stations and some major stations.
For fiscal year 2025, around 20 stations in the Tokyo metropolitan area will see the installation of about 160 machines.
