SHK Line Group has started providing the onboard Wi-Fi service “Ferry Wi-Fi” using Starlink on six ships of the Shin Nihonkai Ferry and Tokyo Kyushu Ferry beginning July 1.
SpaceX’s Starlink is provided through KDDI and Wire and Wireless. It allows for internet communication at speeds of up to 220 Mbps.
The ships equipped are Shin Nihonkai Ferry’s ‘Lavender,’ ‘Azalea,’ ‘Suzuran,’ ‘Suisen,’ and Tokyo Kyushu Ferry’s ‘Hamayu’ and ‘Soleil.’ The coverage area includes some public spaces such as the entrance hall, forward salon, and restaurant, with a fee of 1,500 yen for 24 hours. It is free for au users.
