JAL apologizes after contractor’s security screener arrested for cash theft at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport
The Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) issued a stern warning to ANA Wings following a string of safety troubles, including several classified as serious incidents.
On April 7, ANA Flight 389 from Tokyo/Haneda to Yonago began descending early during approach to Yonago Airport, resulting in a low altitude. The terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) activated, and the crew executed an emergency escape maneuver.
On May 22, ANA Flight 1272 from Sapporo/New Chitose to Hiroshima, while taxiing at Hiroshima Airport, entered a taxiway closed for construction and rolled the main landing gear tire over a light mounted on a concrete base marking the detour route before stopping. Two passengers sustained minor injuries.
On June 22, ANA Flight 372 from Nagasaki to Nagoya/Chubu was descending toward Chubu Centrair International Airport when the cabin pressure dropped. The crew manually deployed the oxygen masks and landed. Three passengers sustained minor injuries.
On August 20, ANA Flight 4841 from Sapporo/New Chitose to Wakkanai failed to obtain runway status information from the Wakkanai aerodrome flight information officer before landing and touched down on a runway that was being used by a bird-control vehicle. As a result, three flights were canceled, affecting about 170 booked passengers.
The incidents in April, June, and August have been designated as serious incidents.
JCAB instructed the airline to consider additional measures to ensure the safety of air transport and to report its recurrence-prevention plan by September 19.
ANA Wings stated, “We take this stern warning seriously. With top management leading the effort and all employees united, we will thoroughly implement recurrence-prevention measures to restore trust in ANA Wings.”
