Ethiopian Airlines Group and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on a strategic logistics hub concept.
Trade between Japan and Africa faces challenges such as surging ocean freight rates, long transit times, and the burden of inland transport, fueling growing demand for air cargo.
The initiative was realized within the framework of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) and is positioned under the Government of Japan’s Africa policy as an important private-sector cooperation project.
Near Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, Africa’s largest airport—with four runways—is expected to be completed in 2029, and further strengthening of logistics hub functions is anticipated. The parties will also collaborate on developing in-flight services that incorporate Japanese cuisine and cultural elements.
