JR East to run retro-wrapped Yamanote Line trains in Tokyo for 100th anniversary
Nankai Electric Railway has completed the renovation of the concourse inside the 2nd-floor Central Gate at Namba Station in Osaka, Japan, and will put it into service from September 27.
By removing the existing facing bricks and floor tiles, and introducing a new white-based interior along with columns designed to make use of curved forms, the space has been made brighter. In addition, by incorporating linear lighting into the columns and ceiling along pedestrian flow lines, the design naturally guides users’ movements.
On the Nankai Main Line side area (west side), which also connects to the platform for the Rapi:t limited express that links Namba and Kansai International Airport, congestion around the ticket gates had been an issue. By installing seating and large maps along the concourse walls, users who tended to linger in front of the gates are guided toward the walls, helping to alleviate crowding around the gate area.
In conjunction with the renewal, all guidance signage in the concourse has been overhauled with a new design that emphasizes visibility and wayfinding, and the company plans to roll it out to other stations going forward.
