Hong Kong International Airport resumed operations of the North Runway from around 4:20 p.m.
At around 3:53 a.m. on October 20, Emirates flight 9788, operated by Turkey’s ACT Airlines (Boeing 747-400, registration TC-ACF), veered off the North Runway during landing and ended up in the sea. During the excursion, it struck a security company’s patrol car, killing the two security guards on board. Firefighters rescued the four crew members of the freighter.
After completing rescue work and evidence collection, Airport Authority Hong Kong carried out runway restoration and replaced damaged facilities such as fences and runway lights, and, together with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, confirmed there were no impediments to resuming operations.
The aircraft remains in the sea near the runway, and the runway is being kept on standby to facilitate removal operations. Airport Authority Hong Kong says it is coordinating with the aircraft’s owner and arranging the equipment necessary for the removal.
