The Okinawa Prefectural Enterprise Bureau announced that, due to damage to a water conveyance pipe, widespread water outages are expected on Okinawa Main Island (Okinawa Prefecture, Japan) from around 4:00 p.m.
A leak occurred at the exit of the Hanzaki Tunnel in the Shioya area of Ogimi Village, Okinawa Prefecture. The water conveyance pipe was laid in 1967; while aging is suspected, the cause is unknown. Due to a shortage of raw water, transmission from water purification plants is expected to stop in some areas.
Water service will be cut off across all areas of Kin Town, Yomitan Village, Kadena Town, Uruma City, Nishihara Town, Yonabaru Town, Haebaru Town, Yaese Town, Tomigusuku City, Nanjo City, and Itoman City, and in parts of Onna Village, Okinawa City, Kitanakagusuku Village, Nakagusuku Village, Urasoe City, and Naha City. The timeline for restoration is unknown.
Because construction is underway on the East System water conveyance tunnel, water had been routed through an alternate pipeline; however, a leak occurred in the alternate route’s pipe, expanding the impact. While construction on the East System water conveyance tunnel will be suspended to restart conveyance through that route, the resumption of water supply is expected to take until the morning of the 25th.
